Senior Software Engineer, Backend Systems & Infrastructure
Calling All Upstarters!
SENIOR BACK END ENGINEER WANTED!
We are Upstart 13. We are humble, hungry, and competent people who are radically changing the expectations and experience of outsourcing for all participants by challenging barriers that create inequality and by bringing down borders in technology for people everywhere. We’re all about delivering value and doing big things. We have become a game-changer for teams around the world who look to Upstart’s services as a differentiator.
Job Description:
We are seeking a Latam-based Senior Software Engineer, Backend Systems & Infrastructure, to lead the development of backend services while owning the end-to-end infrastructure and integrations that power our platform. In this hybrid role, you will code and architect server-side applications and manage cloud resources, deployment pipelines, and cross-system integrations. This position is a modern blend of backend software engineering, cloud architecture, and systems integration – essentially a next-generation “systems engineer” who ensures that our software and its infrastructure are engineered for scalability, reliability, and efficiency.
Responsibilities:
- Backend Development & API Design: Design, implement, and optimize high-performance and secure server-side logic, services, and APIs. Take ownership of backend components from design through deployment, ensuring robust data models and business logic.
- Systems Integration: Architect and develop integrations between our platform and other systems (e.g., CRM, CMS, legacy databases). Ensure seamless data flow by building and consuming APIs or messaging pipelines, and orchestrate processes so that disparate systems work together efficiently.
- Infrastructure Management (Cloud & DevOps): Own the cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure) that supports our applications. Provision and manage resources (compute, storage, networking) using Infrastructure-as-Code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, etc.), and maintain configuration as the system scales.
- CI/CD Pipeline Ownership: Oversee our Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment pipelines to streamline build, test, and release processes. Implement improvements to achieve faster and more reliable releases.
- Architecture & Scalability: Work closely with the Principal Architect on high-level design of systems. Make key technical decisions on system architecture, database schemas, and infrastructure setup to ensure the platform is scalable, resilient, and aligns with business needs.
- Cloud Migrations & Legacy Modernization: Plan and execute migration of legacy systems to modern cloud-based architectures as needed. For example, you may lead a project to decompose a monolith or move an on-premise system into cloud services.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with front-end developers, product managers, and IT teams to ensure the backend and infrastructure meet functional requirements and integrate with all product parts. Communicate technical decisions and strategies to stakeholders clearly, bridging the gap between software development and operations teams.
- Reliability, Monitoring, and Troubleshooting: Implement robust logging, monitoring, and alerting for applications and infrastructure. When issues arise, perform deep root-cause analysis across the stack – whether it’s a code bug, integration error, or infrastructure failure.
- Best Practices & DevOps Culture: Champion engineering best practices across the full development lifecycle – from code style and peer reviews to automated testing, security, and deployment processes.
Qualifications
Technical skills:
- 8+ years of hands-on experience in backend software development (e.g., building web services, APIs, or distributed systems).
- Proficient in one or more server-side languages (PHP, Python, Node.js, Java) and familiar with software design patterns and architecture principles.
- Strong experience deploying and running applications on cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, or Azure), including a deep understanding of cloud services (compute, storage, networking).
- Experience developing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and using automation tools for testing and deployment.
- Solid understanding of database technologies (SQL and NoSQL) and data modeling, including experience with data migration and transformation.
- Solid understanding of system integration techniques and tools – e.g., messaging systems, RESTful and SOAP APIs, webhooks, ETL processes. Experience integrating third-party platforms or legacy systems into a modern architecture. Familiarity with enterprise integration patterns and data migration practices.
- Experience leading technical projects or mentoring engineers. Ability to work cross-functionally with product, QA, and IT/security teams. You should be comfortable taking initiative in an ambiguous, fast-paced environment, driving the code and infrastructure forward in alignment with broader organizational objectives.
- Proven ability to design scalable system architectures and troubleshoot complex issues across the software and infrastructure stack.
Soft skills:
- Strategic thinker with strong analytical and systems-thinking capabilities.
- Excellent communication skills and a team collaborator, able to work effectively across different teams and stakeholders.
- Self-motivated and proactive, comfortable navigating ambiguity and taking initiative in a dynamic environment.
- Growth-minded and curious, continuously learning new technologies and seeking to improve processes.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and able to iterate quickly and adapt to changing requirements.
Bonus skills:
- Experience with containerization and orchestration tools (Docker, Kubernetes) for deploying and managing services.
- Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation) and configuration management tools.
- Knowledge of monitoring and observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack) and practices for maintaining system reliability and security.
- Familiarity with cloud security best practices: IAM policies, firewalls, secret management, etc.
